English, E. Boston advance

Boston English struck early with four runs in the first inning Saturday, and that proved more than enough for starting pitcher Marcus Melo.

The senior righthander went the distance, striking out eight and allowing two runs on three hits in Boston English’s 7-2 win over visiting West Roxbury in the semifinals of the Boston City League baseball tournament.

English coach Ricardo Figueroa called Melo’s outing, “a dominating performance from beginning to end.’’

Jr Ortiz went 2 for 3, including a bases-loaded opposite-field double in the bottom of the fourth.

Boston English will face East Boston in the city championship at English on Monday at 11 a.m. English faced the Jets twice in the regular season, with English winning both games, 6-3.

English will look to win its fourth city title in the last five years.

East Boston 10, Latin Academy 9 — The Jets (15-4) scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for the win. Senior Billy Saunders and Rafael Rodriguez hit two-run doubles and sophomore John Pimmental hit a walkoff two-run double.

Apponequet 10, Wareham 1 — The host Lakers (11-9) were led by senior outfielder Riley Costa, who went 3 for 3 with two triples and three RBIs.

Silver Lake 6, St. John Paul II 5 — Greg Wozniack had a three-run homer to lead the Lakers and hand St. John Paul its first loss of the season.

Middlesex 4, St. George’s 1 — Sophomore Mike Doherty pitched a no-hitter for the Zebras, allowing a run on a walk and fielding errors.

St. Mary’s 2, North Reading 1 — Matt Costanza pitched a complete game and was named MVP of the Clancy Tournament.

Reading 3, Medford 0 — Senior Liam O'Neill threw a shutout and the Rockets finished the regular season 16-4.

Arlington Catholic 1, Lowell Catholic 0 — Junior Matt Laurendeau pitched two innings of scoreless relief and drove in the only run with a double in the bottom of the eighth inning.

St. Peter-Marian 3, Malden Catholic 2 — Dylan Fennucio, Pat White, and Matt Demma combined for a five-hitter and seven strikeouts to lead the Guardians (15-6) past the Lancers (10-9) in a semifinal of the Schoolboy vs. Cancer Tournament at Newton South High. SPM will face Doherty in Sunday’s 1 p.m. championship game at Newton South. Pat Gallagher had two singles and two runs for SPM.

Doherty 8, Newton South 5 — Nick David was 3 for 4 with three runs and Brad Ross had a three-run double to spark a four-run fourth to lift the Highlanders (11-8) in a semifinal of the Schoolboy vs. Cancer Tournament at Newton South.

Groton 3, St. Mark’s 2 — Senior Arthur Jelin stole home to win the game for Groton (6-11).

Boys’ lacrosse

Middlesex 12, St. George’s 4 — Sophomore attacker Tyler Hughey led the way for Middlesex (10-5) with four goals and one assist.

Boys’ tennis

Hamilton-Wenham 5, Triton 0 — The Generals (13-5) clinched the Cape Ann Baker title thanks to singles wins from Koby Noguchi, Jack Leary, and Trevor Jones, and doubles wins by Nick McLane and Billy Whelan along with Hunter Ascolillo and Max Forsey.

Rugby

BC High 37, St. John’s Prep 17 — The Eagles made it back-to-back state titles, beating St. John’s Prep in the Division 1 final at Foley Stadium in Worcester. Next year, rugby will become an official MIAA sport.

Softball

Silver Lake 4, Dartmouth 2 — The No. 1-ranked Lakers won the Peter Looney Tournament and finished the regular season 22-0. Maddy Barone struck out 12 and was named MVP, and Caroline Videtto had two hits and two RBIs.

Bridgewater-Raynham 2, Weymouth 1 — Stephanie Cavallaro guided the fourth-ranked Trojans (17-3) with three hits and an RBI.

Latin Academy 11, East Boston 3 — Sophomore Bella Diiorio went 3 for 4 with five RBIs to push the Dragons into the City Championship against Brighton on Monday at 11 a.m.

Brighton 15, O'Bryant 6 — Junior Cassidy Aiello got the win and struck out eight and Kayla Gloss hit a three-run home run for the Bengals (17-2), who advanced to the City League title game Monday.
