ACTON — The 200-meter dash couldn’t have been any closer at the 40th annual girls’ MSTCA Invitational on Saturday at Acton-Boxboro. After Norton junior Brooke-Lynn Williams took a slight lead after the turn, Ashland junior Alyssa Zee caught up and the pair went stride for stride for the final meters, simultaneously leaning over the line.
The Tri-Valley League sprinters both clocked in at 25 seconds flat, but Zee took home the title in a photo finish.
“We’re really good friends, it’s a nice friendly competition,’’ Zee said of Williams. “We go back and forth in everything and I love competing against her. It definitely pushes me because I know how she runs.’’
Zee also took third place in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 3¼ inches and was named the meet’s most outstanding overall athlete.
“She’s awesome. We really push each other,’’ Williams said. “At the end [of the 200] we had a huge hug because we’re always so supportive of each other.’’
Williams made up for the second-place finish in the 200 with a convincing win in the 100, taking first in 12.24 seconds, ahead of Wellesley senior Ally Isley (12.45).
Bellingham senior Sarah Edwards was named the most outstanding runner after winning the 800 in 2:11.16.
“I felt pretty strong, I ended up going out slower than I wanted but it felt pretty good,’’ Edwards said. “This is my first big race of the year so it’s something to build off of.’’
Milton freshman Elise O’Leary won the 400-meter dash in 58.05 seconds and Dartmouth senior Caitlyn Demers finished first in the 400 hurdles in 1:05.82.
Natick freshman Grace Connolly won the mile in 4:59.05, just ahead of Milton sophomore Bridget Mitchell (4:59.50). Bishop Feehan junior Abigail Long cruised to a victory in the 2-mile in 11:17.11, winning by more than 13 seconds.
Milton won the 4 x 100-meter relay in 50.24 seconds, while Belmont won the 4 x 400 (3:59.97) and Plymouth North took the 4 x 800 (9:29.14).
Dartmouth senior Skylar Barthelmes was named the meet’s most outstanding field athlete after securing wins in the javelin (128-5) and shot put (38-11).
Notre Dame (Hingham) senior Kendra Delahunt won the discus with a toss of 112-9.
Newton North junior Liana Reilly cleared 5-5 to win the high jump. Hingham senior Sarah Endyke won the long jump (17-8) and Holliston sophomore Caroline Ward took first in the triple jump (35-10¼). Stoneham senior Giana Lanzillo won the pole vault with a height of 9-6.
