John Cena appeared on “Good Morning America’’ Tuesday and talked about hosting the ESPYs on July 13. Noting that he’s only the third athlete and first professional wrestler to host the annual awards show, “GMA’’ anchor Robin Roberts asked Cena how he’s going to approach the opening monologue.
“I’m just trying to make it through,’’ replied the West Newbury-bred wrestler.
That shouldn’t be a problem for Cena, who’s been making a name for himself outside of the ring as the host of “American Grit’’ and by appearing in movies such as “Daddy’s Home’’ and “Sisters.’’
Cena said his ultimate goal is to have fun on the show.
“I’m just trying to not get the gong, as I’m the first WWE superstar to host the ESPYs. I know what a tremendous honor it is, and I’m steady as a rock. But this is the hand I shoot with,’’ Cena quipped, as he held up his right hand, which was shaking (a coy reference to Gene Wilder’s memorable scene in the 1974 film “Blazing Saddles’’).
“I know that all the pressure is going to be on,’’ said Cena. “I want to have fun. Worst case scenario, I’m going to have fun.’’
A young fan in Times Square asked Cena if he was nervous to host the ESPYs.
“Am I nervous? This is the third suit I’ve had on today,’’ Cena said. “I already sweat through two suits.’’
