The Boston University men’s hockey team, ranked No. 4 in the US College Hockey Online poll, suffered its first shutout loss of the season, a 4-0 setback against the Michigan Wolverines in a non-conference matchup Friday night at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Tony Calderone led the way for the No. 18 Wolverines (5-3-1) with a pair of goals, including an empty-netter at 15:25 of the third to cap the scoring for Michigan. Will Lockwood chipped in with an assist on Jake Slaker’s goal at 6:17 of the third and tallied Michigan’s first goal on the power play at 10:04 of the first period.
Michigan freshman goaltender Hayden Lavigne made 30 saves to blank the Terriers (4-3-1).
UMass 3, Merrimack 1 — Junior Anthony Petrella and freshmen Shane Bear and Jonny Lazarus combined to score three first-period goals to propel the Minutemen (3-4-1, 1-2-1 Hockey East) to their first conference victory of the season at Merrimack (4-5-2, 0-2-2).
Maine 5, UMass-Lowell 2 — Blaine Byron recorded a hat trick to help the Black Bears (4-5-2, 1-2-0) win their first Hockey East game of the season while pinning the No. 5 River Hawks (6-3-2, 2-1-0) with their first conference setback.
Women’s hockey
BC 5, New Hampshire 1 — The sixth-ranked Eagles (8-3-2, 7-2-0 Hockey East) rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Wildcats (3-9-0, 3-4-0) with five unanswered goals. Caitrin Lonergan (one goal, three assists) led the Eagles with a career-best 4 points.
Makenna Newkirk (two goals, one assist), and Megan Keller (three assists) contributed with three-point nights.
NU 4, Merrimack 2 — Denisa Krizova (one goal, one assist), Codie Cross, and McKenna Brand all scored in the final period to help the visiting Huskies (9-3-1, 5-1-0) stave off a six-on-four advantage by Merrimack (4-7-1, 2-4-0) at the end of regulation in North Andover.
Andrea Renner also scored her first collegiate goal for NU, while while Brittany Bugalski made 30 stops in goal.
BU 5, Maine 3 — Junior Victoria Bach recorded her second career hat trick to lift the Terriers (5-4-1, 4-4-0) over the host Black Bears (2-10-0, 1-7-0) in Orono, Maine.
Junior goaltender Erin O’Neil made 26 saves for BU and graduate student Mary Parker broke a 3-3 stalemate at 12:09.
Men’s basketball
UMass 90, UMass-Lowell 76 — Sophomore center Rashaan Holloway made 6 of 7 shots and scored a career-high 21 points for the Minutemen in their season opener against the visiting River Hawks, marking the first Division 1 meeting between both squads.
Donte Clark, the only returning starter from last year’s UMass team, added 14 points and nine rebounds.
Luwane Pipkins added 14 points and fellow freshman Tryn Flowers added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Matt Harris scored 16 points and Jahad Thomas, UMass Lowell’s top-returning scorer, added 15 plus eight rebounds. Freshman Stefan Borovac scored 10 points.
Zach Lewis hit a 3-pointer to put the Minutemen up for good 19-16 en route to a 48-37 halftime lead.
BU 87, NU 77 — T.J. Williams scored 30 points and Alex Murphy added 20 as the host Huskies defeated the Terriers at Matthews Arena in the season opener for both teams.
Williams was 9 of 15 from the field and hit 11 of 15 free throws while Murphy was 7 of 10 from the field including three 3-pointers and had eight assists.
Eric Fanning led BU with 29 points. Justin Alston added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Nicholls State 79, BC 73 — DeAndre Harris scored 28 points, Liam Thomas added 14 points and Nicholls State coach Richie Riley won his debut with the Colonels.
The Eagles, who got a team-high 15 points from Ty Graves, rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second half to tie it on A.J. Turner’s foul-line jumper with 2:26 to play, but Nicholls State went on a 6-0 run to take control.
Women’s basketball
NU 78, BU 59 — With the help of seven 3-pointers, Jess Genco tallied a career-high 27 points and added six rebounds to lead the host Huskies in their season-opening win at Cabot Center.
BU senior Courtney Latham led the Terriers with 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Hartford 65, BC 56 — The Eagles were outscored, 23-13, in the second quarter of their season opener. Lindsey Abed led host Hartford by scoring 10 of her game-high 16 points during a 17-0 run in that period. Sophomore Mariella Fasoula led BC with 19 points and a career-high five assists.
