Fire causes Ga. overpass to collapse
ATLANTA — A large fire caused an overpass on Interstate 85 to collapse in Atlanta on Thursday.
WSB-TV reported that a massive blaze was burning underneath I-85 northbound and had shut down several roads in northeast Atlanta.
No injuries to motorists or emergency responders were reported, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
“We do have the fire under control,’’ Atlanta fire spokesman Sergeant Cortez Stafford told the newspaper.
Black smoke could be seen for miles.
The Journal-Constitution reported that Georgia Governor Nathan Deal said the cause of the fire is not yet known but “the speculation I’ve heard is that there are some PVC products that caught fire.’’
