Shane Frommer rushed 18 times for 87 yards and scored on a back-breaking 47-yard touchdown run late in the game to cap a furious 28-point rally that lifted No. 4 King Philip to a 28-10 victory over No. 20 Mansfield on Thursday night in Wrentham.
Frommer also scored on a 91-yard interception return in the second quarter that proved to give the Warriors a huge momentum swing after Mansfield surged to an early 10-0 lead with 10:52 left before intermission.
“We pride ourselves to keep driving, keep working until the very end,’’ Frommer said. “We keep working until we come out on top.’’
Mansfield opened the game with a 14-play, 80-yard scoring drive capped by Dan DeGirolamo’s 9-yard run. After Hunter Ferreira intercepted King Philip quarterback Brendan Lydon, Mike DeBolt kicked a 37-yard field goal in the second quarter to give the Hornets a 10-0 lead.
The Hornets threatened again with less than two minutes left before intermission when Fromer picked off a deflected pass and went untouched 91 yards for the score.
Cole Baker’s extra point pulled the Warriors within 10-7 with 1:38 remaining in the first half.
“The interception was a very critical flip of the whole game,’’ said Mansfield coach Mike Redding. “But they make a great play, a great return, and we had dominated, but we’re only up 3, and they get some momentum at the half.’’
After Mansfield’s defense held King Philip to 31 yards total offense after the first 22 minutes of the game, Frommer’s pick-6 proved pivotal, as it triggered an unanswered 28-point spree for the Warriors.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Warriors took advantage of great field position at the 50 and grabbed a 14-10 lead when Lydon found senior tight end Dylan Leonard on a 19-yard TD pass to cap a four-play scoring drive just eight seconds into the final frame.
Mansfield controlled the ball with a little more than seven minutes remaining in the game, but KP junior Luke D’Amico picked off Mansfield QB Damani Scott at the Hornets 48. Lydon then connected with senior Tom Madden on a 31-yard scoring strike to expand King Philip’s lead, 21-10.
Frommer made Scott pay for another interception when he exploded for his 47-yard TD run that sealed the victory.
“They definitely had us on the ropes, and it’s hard to get it done when things aren’t going your way,’’ said Warriors coach Brian Lee. “You just have to keep calm, do your job, and be ready for it when an opportunity comes.’’
