Harper succeeds in a pinch
Heroics force extras, Nationals win in 16
Associated Press

Bryce Harper tied it with a pinch-hit home run in the ninth inning, pitcher Oliver Perez put down a bunt in the 15th that kept the game going, and Chris Heisey homered in the 16th to give the Washington Nationals a wild 6-5 win over the visiting Minnesota Twins.

At 5 hours, 56 minutes, it was the longest regular-season game in Nationals’ history. By far one of the craziest, too.

Harper was supposed to have a day off, but stepped up to lead off the ninth with Washington trailing, 4-3, and connected for the first pinch homer of his career.

Pirates 12, Diamondbacks 10 — Arizona pitcher Shelby Miller played left field and chased after Sean Rodriguez’s go-ahead double in the 13th inning before striking out to end the game, and visiting Pittsburgh beat the Diamondbacks.

Miller had to play the outfield after shortstop Nick Ahmed was ejected in the 12th for arguing balls and strikes. Miller is the first Diamondback pitcher to play a position and the first major leaguer to do so since Jason Gurka played right field for the Rockies on Sept. 15.

The Pirates had a season-high 20 hits and built a five-run lead after three innings, but Arizona scored twice in the eighth and Paul Goldschmidt tied it in the ninth with a two-run homer.

Pittsburgh scored twice in the 12th to go up, 10-8, but Neftali Feliz (1-0) couldn’t hold that lead.

Rodriguez lined his double off the wall in left off Evan Marshall (0-1), and Jonathon Niese made it 12-10 win a run-scoring single.

Mets 3, Braves 2 — In Atlanta, Jacob deGrom made a successful return to the mound after tending to his ill infant son and an injury, pitching New York past the Braves for a three-game sweep.

Back in the rotation after healing from a sore right lat and seeing his son recover from a health concern, deGrom (2-0) gave up one run and eight hits in 5? innings. He walked none and struck out three.

Rays 8, Yankees 1 — Steven Souza Jr. homered twice on his 27th birthday and Tampa Bay went deep five times in all, finally giving Drew Smyly some run support in a victory over host New York. Souza and Corey Dickerson each hit a two-run homer in a five-run first inning against Michael Pineda.

Blue Jays 6, Athletics 3 — Jose Bautista hit a two-run homer, Ezequiel Carrera added a solo shot, and Toronto beat visiting Oakland.

Josh Donaldson scored twice for Toronto. The Blue Jays, the highest-scoring team in the majors last year, have posted at least five runs for a season-best three games in a row.

Royals 6, Orioles 1 — Yordano Ventura settled down after a shaky first inning, Eric Hosmer homered to continue his hot streak, and Kansas City beat visiting Baltimore.

Alex Gordon also went deep before the Royals strung together a series of hits in a four-run seventh that broke the game open. Hosmer finished 2 for 3 to push his AL-leading on-base streak to 26 games.

Indians 6, Tigers 3 — Francisco Lindor got three hits and visiting Cleveland overcame an early injury to starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco to beat Detroit, finishing off a three-game sweep. Carrasco hurt his right hamstring on an awkward play while covering first base.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus juggled his lineup, leaving slumping Miguel Cabrera and Justin Upton on the bench. A day after Ausmus kept the clubhouse closed for a half-hour after a loss, Detroit dropped its fourth in a row and fell for the seventh time in nine games.

Carrasco and Tigers starter Shane Greene (1-2) both left the game with injuries in a span of about 15 minutes. Greene broke open a blister on his pitching hand.

White Sox 4, Rangers 1 — Mat Latos allowed just one run on seven hits in six innings to win his fourth straight start as host Chicago beat Texas.

Dioner Navarro had a home run and two runs batted in and Brett Lawrie added two hits and an RBI as Chicago won for the fifth time in six games.

Brewers 8, Phillies 5 — Scooter Gennett and Alex Presley homered in a six-run sixth inning, backing an encouraging outing by struggling starter Wily Peralta in host Milwaukee’s victory over Philadelphia.

The Brewers also hit four doubles in the sixth, when they chased Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff.

Cubs 9, Red 0 — Anthony Rizzo drove in four runs with his 10th career two-homer game, Jason Hammel pitched six scoreless innings, and visiting Chicago improved to 14-5 for the first time in 47 years.

Tommy La Stella hit two doubles and his first homer of the season and Jason Heyward had four hits and three RBIs as the Cubs rebounded from their worst loss of the season, 13-5, on Saturday.

Mariners 9, Angels 4 — Wade Miley overcame a shaky first inning that included a home run by slumping Albert Pujols to post his first victory in a Mariners uniform, helping Seattle beat host Los Angeles.

Kyle Seager, Leonys Martin, and Seth Smith hit home runs for the Mariners. Pujols ended a career-worst 0-for-26 skid with his 563d career homer, tying Reggie Jackson for 13th place all-time.

Marlins 5, Giants 4 — J.T. Realmuto matched his career high with four hits, including a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning, and visiting Miami beat San Francisco to avoid a three-game sweep.

Giancarlo Stanton also homered and reached base four times, Christian Yelich drove in two runs, and Dee Gordon and Marcell Ozuna had two hits apiece for Miami.

Dodgers 12, Rockies 10 — Chase Utley drove in the go-ahead run with a double in Los Angeles’s five-run ninth and the Dodgers overcame a crucial error by Yasiel Puig to beat host Colorado.

Trailing 10-7 in the ninth, the Dodgers lit up Rockies closer Jake McGee (0-1), with Trayce Thompson scoring the tying run on a wild pitch. Utley followed with an RBI double. All this after the Dodgers squandered an early six-run lead.

Cardinals 8, Padres 5 — Jedd Gyorko homered, tripled, and singled, and rookie Aledmys Diaz had a homer among his three hits as visiting St. Louis rallied to beat San Diego.
