Harvard rallies past Union in OT
FROM WIRE REPORTS

Freshman foward Henry Bowlby scored twice, including 4:54 into overtime, and Harvard rallied to knock off Union, 4-3, on Saturday night at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.

Harvard (7-6-1, 6-3-0 ECAC) three times erased one-goal deficits, including twice in the third period, to get its third straight win and fifth in the last six games.

With time winding down in overtime, Bowlby took a stretch pass from Wiley Sherman down the left side and rifled a shot low past Union keeper Jake Kupsky with 5.1 seconds left to win it. It was Bowlby’s fifth goal of the season.

Ryan Donato scored on a power play at 12:22 of the second period to tie it at 1.

Bowlby got his first at 8:01 of the third to make it 2-2 and Michael Floodstrand scored at 8:56 to tie it at 3, his strike coming just 24 seconds after Anthony Rinaldi had put Union (11-11-1, 7-3-0) ahead for the third time.

Merrick Madsen turned aside 35 shots in the win for Harvard.

Northeastern 6, Bentley 1 — Adam Gaudette had two goals and two assists, and Nolan Stevens and Brandon Hawkins also scored twice as the ninth-ranked Huskies (12-5-3) rolled to a nonconference home win over the Falcons (7-8-4). The loss ended Bentley’s seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1).

Maine 3, BU 0 — Freshman Jeremy Swayman made 31 saves, including 14 in the third period, and the surging Black Bears (11-7-1, 5-4-1 Hockey East) knocked off the Terriers (8-11-1, 6-7-1) for their sixth straight win.

Nolan Vesey (6:39 of the second period), Ryan Smith (11:35 of the second), and Brendan Robbins (11:46 of the third) scored for Maine, which extended its unbeaten streak to eight (7-0-1).

BC 3, Northern Michigan 3 — Julius Mattila had a goal and an assist and the No. 13 Eagles (10-8-3) earned a tie against the Wildcats (11-10-3) in the consolation game of the Ice Vegas Invitational.

Men’s basketball

Providence 81, Xavier 72 — Kyron Cartwright scored 19 points, Rodney Bullock added 17, and the host Friars upset the fifth-ranked Musketeers, ending Xavier’s 10-game winning streak.

‘‘Our kids met the challenge today,’’ said Providence coach Ed Cooley. ‘‘Life in the Big East, it’s a monster every single game.’’

Cartwright added nine assists and four steals and Bullock also contributed six rebounds and two blocked shots as the Friars (11-6, 2-2) beat a ranked team for the first time this season.

Kerem Kanter had 24 points and 12 rebounds — eight on the offensive boards — in 20 minutes for Xavier (15-2, 3-1).

‘‘It certainly wasn’t our day,’’ coach Chris Mack said. ‘‘We know who Providence is. We know what each of their strengths is. But being able to take it away, that’s different.’’

Trevon Bluiett, who leads Xavier with 19.8 points per game, had 12 points but was scoreless in the second half.

‘‘Maybe it just wasn’t his day today, because I think he’s one of the best players in the country,’’ Cooley said.

It was the Friars’ 11th win over a top-5 team, and their first since beating No. 4 Villanova two years ago.

To counter a 44-28 rebounding advantage for Xavier — and a 22-0 whitewash in second-chance points — Providence had 11 steals, 9 blocks, and a 19-6 edge in points off turnovers.

‘‘Our errant shots, our wild, reckless shots and our inability to handle the ball in the first half really put us behind the eight ball,’’ Mack said. ‘‘We gave them a lot of confidence for the first 25 minutes because we were throwing the ball in the stands.’’

Harvard 61, Dartmouth 51 — Seth Towns scored 16 points with three 3-pointers, leading four into double figures as the host Crimson (6-9) used the long ball to hold off the Big Green (4-8) in the Ivy League opener for both teams.

Justin Bassey, Towns, and Rio Haskett hit treys on three of four early possessions as Harvard, which has defeated Dartmouth in the last 11 Ivy League openers, broke to a 10-point lead at halftime.

Miles Wright (23 points) hit a pair from deep during a 15-0 run that tied the game, 37-37, seven minutes into the second half, and he later gave Dartmouth a 45-42 lead.

Harvard’s Corey Johnson, Bassey, and Christian Juzang answered with four consecutive 3-pointers for a 54-45 Crimson lead with 1:35 to go. Harvard closed it out going 5 of 6 from the line.

Half of Harvard’s 50 shots were taken from long range, making 12 of 25. Juzang scored 12 points with two 3-pointers. Bassey and Johnson each made three threes, finishing with 11 points apiece.

UMass 62, Dayton 60 — Luwane Pipkins scored 25 points, Carl Pierre added 15, and the visiting Minutemen (8-8, 1-2 Atlantic 10) edged the Flyers (7-8, 1-2).

UMass used a 14-2 run spanning the end of the first half and beginning of the second to erase a 10-point deficit. Malik Hines then capped a 6-0 UMass run with back-to-back baskets for a 58-50 lead with 6:18 to go. But Dayton’s Josh Cunningham scored the next 6 points to pull the Flyers within 2 points with 3:48 to go.

UMass’s Unique McLean and Pipkins made the only two field goals the rest of the way.

Chris Baldwin chipped in 10 points for UMass, which had lost three of its last four.

UConn 70, East Carolina 65 — Jalen Adams scored 18 points and the host Huskies (8-7, 1-2 American Athletic) held off the Pirates (7-8, 1-3) for their first conference win this season.

Terry Larrier and Christian Vital each added 16 points for UConn, which snapped a four-game losing streak. B.J. Tyson led all scorers with 21 for ECU, but missed a big 3-pointer with three seconds left that would have tied the game.

Rhode Island 81, George Washington 60 — Jared Terrell hit 4 of 5 from behind the 3-point arc and the Rams (11-3, 3-0 Atlantic 10) won on the road for the first time this season by rolling past the Colonials (8-8, 1-2).

Football

FCS championship — Easton Stick threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Darrius Shepherd and North Dakota State took back the FCS title, beating James Madison, 17-13, a year after the Bison’s five-year run atop the FCS ended against the Dukes in the semifinals.

North Dakota State (14-1) also ended James Madison’s streak at 26 wins, denying the Dukes (14-1) a second straight title and spoiling what would have been their first undefeated, untied season.

The Dukes, who trailed, 17-3, late in the first half, had a chance to win after punter Harry O’Kelly ran 24 yards on a fake. But Bryan Schor’s desperation throw to the end zone on fourth-and-16 with 58 seconds left fell incomplete.

Women’s hockey

Union 3, Harvard 1 — Cheyenne Harris scored twice and the host Dutchwomen (6-13-3, 4-6-0 ECAC) surprised the Crimson (8-5-1, 6-3-1). Harvard’s Haley Mullins scored at 8:36 of the third period for Harvard’s lone goal.

Maine 4, BU 1 — The visiting Black Bears (13-6-3, 7-3-2 Hockey East) scored twice in a span of 1 minute 28 seconds early in the first period and never looked back in knocking off the Terriers (7-11-4, 3-8-3).

Women’s basketball

Dartmouth 63, Harvard 56 — Taylor Rooks scored a career-high 23 points, but Cy Lippold answered with 19 for the host Big Green (9-5) in their win over the Crimson (7-6) in the Ivy League opener for both teams.

St. Bonaventure 69, UMass 59 — Hailey Leidel scored 20 points but the Minutewomen (8-8, 0-3 Atlantic 10) were no match for the host Bonnies (6-10, 1-2) in dropping their fourth in a row.
