■ FUGITIVE RETURNED A fugitive accused of attacking his roommate with a hammer and steak knife nine years ago in Revere was due to be returned to Massachusetts Tuesday from Panama, where he was arrested last month, according to the FBI. Douglas Pereira Lemes, 26, was wanted on two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, charges stemming from an attack on June 24, 2008, in Revere, according to the Boston office of the FBI. He will be returned to the custody of Revere police, and prosecuted by the Suffolk district attorney’s office, the statement said.
■ OXYGEN CAUSED FIRE A fatal fire at a Quincy home on Feb. 12 that killed a woman and her grandson was accidental, fueled by home medical oxygen, the state fire marshal’s office announced Tuesday. The fire at the single family home on Bell Street started in the living room, where one victim had survived previous fires after falling asleep while smoking, officials said in a statement. Last month, several cylinders of oxygen were in the room when the fire broke out. Oxygen released into the air fueled the fire that raced up the stairs and trapped the victims, Thelma Powers, 67, and William Powers, 19, on the second floor. A third person escaped, officials said.
■ IMMIGRANT SUSPECT Immigration officials say a man charged with killing a teacher’s aide in Worcester this year is the subject of a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer. The Telegram & Gazette reported that 54-year-old Jose Melendez was being held in connection with the February slaying of 49-year-old Sandra Hehir and faces possible deportation. Melendez was charged after police say investigators matched DNA from the crime scene to DNA from an unsolved 2000 rape in which he was a suspect. An ICE detainer is a request for local law enforcement to hold a person so they can be taken into custody by federal immigration officials. (AP)
