A souvenir blanket once owned by Eben Draper, who served as governor of Massachusetts over a century ago, sold at an estate auction for $39,360, according to Dan Meader, gallery director for John McInnis Auctioneers.
The hand-woven Native American ceremonial blanket was sold at an estate auction in Hopedale on Friday. It came from the home of Draper’s grandson. “The [former] governor bought that in 1914 when he went on a great big Alaskan adventure,’’ said Meader. “We found it in an attic, wrapped in paper that was dated 1956.’’ Draper served as governor from 1909 until 1911. Described by the auctioneer as “a rare Chilkat bride’s blanket from the Northwest coast,’’ it was sold along with Draper’s papers and correspondence from his Alaskan trip. The buyer was from London, Meader said.
