To Norton’s Brooke-Lynn Williams, the 55-meter dash at the New England Championships on Sunday felt like “a movie in fast-forward.’’
Williams ran 6.87 seconds in the event at the Reggie Lewis Center, currently the second-fastest time in the country, topping the New England record of 6.91 seconds she set last week at the All-State meet.
“I remember my start and then the whole middle just felt like a blur,’’ said Williams. “Next thing you know, I’m leaning.’’
Williams beat Cambridge’s Brianna Duncan, in the lane directly to her right, by .07 seconds, the same margin separating the two at the All-State meet. This time around, Williams thought Duncan had a step on her out of the gate.
“She definitely practiced, she had a great start, I have to give it to her,’’ said Williams. “Usually I get her out of the blocks, so I was like, ‘Get straight, get going, and focus on the race.’?’’
Williams will now turn her sights on the New Balance Nationals in two weeks in New York City, where she will be running 60 meters instead of 55.
Duncan also placed second in the long jump at 18-8¾ feet, behind Worcester Tech’s Adja Sackor (19-6).
In the boys’ high jump, Newburyport’s Alec Reduker had his sights set on 7 feet after coming up just short at the All-State meet last week. Reduker narrowly missed his personal goal again, but he won the event at 6-7.
“I want it so bad. I wanted to get it today but I’ll get it eventually . . . maybe nationals,’’ said Reduker. “I’m still enjoying this. After three straight weeks of jumping, I’m happy with what I did today.’’
The Lincoln-Sudbury girls kicked off the day with a convincing win in the 4?x 800 relay. Alexa Babick, Nicole Kerrigan, Katherine Malone, and Ariel Keklak came in with a time of 9:10.78, 10 seconds ahead of runner-up Newton South.
In other relay action, Lexington’s Alexandra Cox, Leah Smith, Jessica Foley, and Melissa Solomon won the 4 x 400 relay (3:57.00) in an all-Eastern Mass. podium along with Mansfield and Milton. Lexington also placed second in the 4 x 200 relay.
On the boys’ side, Andover’s Jeremy Chan, Raymond Gorzela, Andrew Lucia, and Jeremy Travaglini took the 4 x 200 (1:31.29), followed by Peter Murphy, Will Collins, Matthew Antes, and Colin Grip from Acton-Boxboro (1:31.46).
Latin Academy’s Ashley Lewis was victorious in the girls’ 600 (1:33.86), with Acton-Boxboro’s Samantha Friborg (1:33.96) and Plymouth North’s Jacklyn Sullivan (1:34.74) rounding out the top three.
In the shot put, Dartmouth’s Skylar Barthelmes took home the girls’ title at 43-6. Newton North’s Elmer Acuna won the boys’ competition at 57-1.
