A heaven’s-eye view view of how — and what — we’re doing with Earth

Peering out rocketship windows from outer space, looking down at Earth, many astronauts experienced the “overview effect,’’ an emotional response to beholding the wholeness of our planet. In a striking new book of photographs called “Overview: A New Perspective on Earth,’’ Benjamin Grant has gathered satellite shots of the planet gleaned from his Instagram account, Daily Overview. The book is divided into sections on how we harvest, live, play, extract, move, waste, power, and design. The tulip fields in Lisse, Netherlands, are bold striping swaths of color; the residential neighborhoods of Boca Raton, Fla., look like Native American beadwork; and the scars and unnatural colors from aluminum processing are a reminder of our destructive human impact. From far away, it’s possible to get a glimpse of what connects us, and why it’s worth protecting.
