Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is used to getting what he wants. But failing to make a deal to land quarterback Paxton Lynch in the first round of the NFL Draft has him second-guessing himself.
“When I look back on my life, I overpaid for my big successes every time,’’ Jones told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “And when I tried to get a bargain, get it a little cheaper or get a better deal on it, I ended up usually either getting it and not happy I got it. Or missing it.
“And I probably should have overpaid here.’’
The Super Bowl champion Broncos traded with the Seahawks to move up six spots and take the Memphis quarterback with the 26th overall selection.
A day after Thursday’s first round, Jones was still stewing about his failure to land the quarterback who could have been the successor to Tony Romo.
“I was still mad about it,’’ Jones said. “Actually thought we had it done.’’
While Lynch is seen as a quarterback who needs a couple of seasons learning the pro game, he is considered by some to be the best passer of the 2016 draft class.
Dallas also attempted to trade up to get quarterback Connor Cook in the fourth round, before the Oakland Raiders jumped ahead of them and grabbed the Michigan State star. Jones said he wasn’t too disappointed about that miss.
The Cowboys eventually grabbed their heir in Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott in the fourth round. Jones called Prescott a “heady player’’ with “upside.’’
Bears waive Rolle
The Bears parted ways with Antrel Rolle.
The three-time Pro Bowl safety said on Twitter that he appreciated the opportunity the Bears gave him and that he is ‘‘looking forward to what is next.’’
The move comes after the Bears drafted two safeties — Deon Bush of Miami in the fourth round and William & Mary’s DeAndre Houston-Carson in the sixth.
The team also announced it had released offensive lineman Matt Slauson.
Rolle appeared in just seven games for Chicago last season after signing a three-year deal. He had one pass breakup and no interceptions before being placed on injured reserve in December because of a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee.
Jets sign Beckham’s cousin Terron Beckham is getting a chance to follow in his famous cousin’s football footsteps.
The Jets invited the running back, a distant relative of Giants star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., to attend their rookie minicamp next week on a tryout basis.
Beckham, 23, who last played football in high school, also posted a picture of himself on Instagram, shirtless and slightly covered by a Jets logo graphic.
‘‘What a time, to be alive,’’ Beckham wrote. ‘‘Your boy is blessed. I am so thankful for this opportunity. GOD IS SO GOOD MAN . . . I am shaking right now.’’
Beckham, listed at 5 feet 11 inches and 223 pounds, has been a personal trainer the last few years. He had an impressive performance at an NFL combine-like pro day at TEST Sports Club in New Jersey in early April in front of a handful of teams, including the Jets and Giants.
According to published reports, Beckham ran the 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds, had a 44½-inch vertical jump, and bench-pressed 225 pounds 36 times.
