SCORE: Twins 10, Red Sox 3 (3 inn.)
BREAKDOWN: The game was delayed by rain for 42 minutes then called in the bottom of the third. But there was plenty of action at Hammond Stadium. The Twins sent 14 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored nine runs on nine hits. Brian Dozier scored twice, singled, and homered.
THUMBS UP: J.D. Martinez had two hits for the Sox, one a double. He also drove in a run. They won’t count toward the statistics, but he has looked good at the plate since getting started in games on Wednesday. “I’m just happy I’m hitting it. The fact that they’re falling in is cool,’’ Martinez said. “I don’t really pay too much mind to spring training. Just trying to get my legs underneath me and slow the ball down and see good pitches.’’
THUMBS DOWN: Jalen Beeks was scheduled to throw a simulated game at Fenway South. Then he was picked to face the Twins when the decision was made to have David Price stay behind and throw in the bullpen. Beeks lasted seven hitters and didn’t get an out. He was charged with seven runs.
MEDICAL REPORT: Brock Holt singled in the third inning in his first game since straining an abdominal muscle on Tuesday. He is now fully cleared.
AROUND THE BASES: Tyler Thornburg threw a 34-pitch bullpen session at Fenway South. The righthanded reliever has made better progress than expected following thoracic outlet surgery. “I’m very happy for him,’’ manager Alex Cora said. “Coming in, I didn’t know what was going to happen.’’ . . . The Sox haven’t had much use for lefthander Roenis Elias since he was obtained from Seattle before the 2016 season. They are now planning to use him as a reliever. Elias dropped down to a sidearm delivery and hit 94 miles per hour on Friday. He could be effective as a lefthanded specialist.
NEXT GAME: The Sox host the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Rick Porcello opposes Hunter Harvey. The game will be on NESN and WEEI-FM.
