Sharon moves to evict school for unpaid rent

The town of Sharon has issued an eviction notice to the Bilingual Montessori School of Sharon for nonpayment of rent. Though not yet open, the school occupies a town-owned building at 120 Lakeview St.

“I expect that they’re going to come up with the money,’’ Town Administrator Frederic Turkington said.

He said the school has been delinquent on its $2,583.33 monthly rent multiple times, and the town negotiated deferred payments with interest.

The Board of Selectmen voted May 24 to begin eviction proceedings.

Selectman Walter “Joe’’ Roach recused himself from the vote; Turkington said Roach lives near the property.

As of Tuesday, the school owed three months’ back rent plus the June rent, and an eviction notice was served that day, Turkington said on Tuesday.

Reached by phone minutes later, school owner Linda Valentin said the check had been delivered to the town that morning. She declined to answer further questions.

Jennifer Flagg, a spokeswoman for the school, said the check was delivered around noon. “It was an administrative oversight this time,’’ she said.

She said the school still plans to open the Sharon location and intends to pay the entire summer’s rent this week to avoid further problems.

Valentin runs another branch of the school, previously called Arc-En-Ciel Daycare, in a church in Jamaica Plain.

Valentin and the church, Our Lady of the Cedars of Lebanon, have been involved in a legal battle over her lease for years.

Flagg said the case does not involve nonpayment of rent, but she would not comment further, saying the case is nearly resolved.

Turkington said the school has made a significant investment in the Sharon property, including improvements to the septic system and parking.
