TUESDAY’S WEATHER: It was a bit overcast but temperatures were in the high 70s.
FUNDAMENTALLY SPEAKING: Kyle Kendrick, Henry Owens, Rick Porcello, and David Price threw live batting practice. That was about the extent of the excitement. The other pitchers threw and then did 30 minutes of defensive work. The outfielders worked in the main stadium, chasing balls to the base of the wall.
PLAYER OF THE DAY: Keep an eye on Kendrick. The 32-year-old righthander has nine seasons of major league experience and could emerge as one of the top depth starters in Triple A. Kendrick pitches to contact and is hardly overpowering, but could represent the team’s best chance to get through five or six innings in a pinch.
AROUND THE BASES: Manager John Farrell said none of the primary starting pitchers would work the first four games of the exhibition season . . . The players attended the team’s annual charity golf tournament after the workout . . . Hall of Famer Jim Rice, a special instructor in camp, said that had he not signed with the Red Sox in 1971, he would have accepted a football scholarship to Nebraska to play safety. The Cornhuskers, a national powerhouse at the time, came to South Carolina to recruit Rice. “I could run then,’’ he said. “But I wanted to play baseball.’’
MEDICAL REPORT: Steven Wright (right shoulder) and Drew Pomeranz (left elbow) came out of their bullpen sessions fine and will get back on the mound Thursday. “They felt good,’’ Farrell said.
SCHEDULE: The Sox have their final workout-only day on Wednesday, but rain is in the forecast. That could move everything into the batting cages. The Sox start their game schedule Thursday against Northeastern.
