Grizzlies fire coach Joerger

The Memphis Grizzlies fired coach Dave Joerger Saturday in a surprising move after three seasons and three straight playoff appearances. A team battered by injuries finished the regular season at 42-40 before being swept in the first round by San Antonio. The Grizzlies used an NBA-record 28 players this season. Joerger was named coach in the 2013-14 season . . . Hall of Famer Howard Garfinkel, a legend at every level of basketball, died at 86 of pneumonia. Garfinkel — known as “Garf’’ — ran the famous Five-Star Basketball Camp for decades.

Frates’s number retired

Boston College retired Pete Frates’s No. 3 jersey at its fifth annual ALS Awareness Game. Frates played outfield from 2004-07 and was captain of the team his senior year. Since being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at age 27, Frates has helped raise millions to fight the disease by popularizing the Ice Bucket Challenge . . . Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left thumb . . . The Rangers signed outfielder Drew Stubbs and moved injured slugger Josh Hamilton, who is still recovering from offseason knee surgery, to the 60-day disabled list.

Boudreau to coach Wild

Bruce Boudreau agreed to terms to coach the Wild, team general manager Chuck Fletcher announced. Boudreau was fired after five seasons with the Ducks two days after Anaheim was bounced out of the first round of the playoffs . . . Patrick Kane of the Blackhawks, Jamie Benn of the Stars, and Sidney Crosby of the Penguins were named finalists for the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP.

. . . Auston Matthews scored his first two goals for the United States in a 6-3 win over Belarus in the preliminary round of the world championships in Russia.

Leicester raises trophy

Leicester City captain Wes Morgan collected the English Premier League trophy after the preseason 5,000-to-1 long shot got its hands on the biggest prize in English soccer. It was one of the most improbable turnarounds by any sports team . . . Christian Bolanos scored his third goal in three games and the Whitecaps rallied past the Timbers, 2-1, in Vancouver in MLS play . . . Dominic Oduro scored in the 93d minute and the Impact rallied to tie the host Crew, 4-4 . . . Rookie Tsubasa Endoh scored his first career MLS goal to lead host Toronto FC past FC Dallas,1-0 . . . Jermaine Jones scored in the 47th minute and the host Rapids beat Real Salt Lake, 1-0 . . . Giles Barnes and Andrew Wenger scored in the first half and the host Houston Dynamo shut out Sporting Kansas City, 2-0 . . . In NWSL play, Christen Press scored the lone goal as the Chicago Red Stars beat the host Boston Breakers, 1-0.

UAB running back shot

University of Alabama at Birmingham running back Greg Bryant was in critical condition at a Florida hospital after he was shot in West Palm Beach. Police say the former Notre Dame player and a passenger, Maurice Grover, were found shot in a car along Interstate 95. Grover had minor injuries . . . Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake signed a $15 million, two-year contract extension, through the 2017 season. Wake, 34, is coming off an Achilles’ tendon injury that sidelined him after seven games last year. He made the Pro Bowl in 2010 and 2012-14. His 70 career sacks rank second in team history . . . Tight end Delanie Walker and the Titans agreed to a two-year contract extension, worth $14.7 million with $8.2 million in guarantees.

Alvarez decks Khan

Canelo Alvarez needed only one big right hand to turn a close boxing match into a smashing knockout in Las Vegas. Struggling with Amir Khan’s speed, Alvarez unleashed a long right hand that sent Khan backward on the canvas, where referee Kenny Bayless didn’t even bother to count him out at 2:37 of the sixth round, and Alvarez retained his piece of the middleweight title . . . Andy Murray defeated Rafael Nadal, 7-5, 6-4, to reach his second straight Madrid Open final. He will play Novak Djokovic for the title Sunday. Djokovic defeated Kei Nishikori, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), in the other semifinal . . . Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps and fiancee Nicole Johnson welcomed their first child, Boomer Robert Phelps, Thursday night.

Accusations that four Russian gold-medal winners at the Sochi Olympics used performance-enhancing drugs are just ‘‘speculation,’’ Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko said. The allegations were made by former Russian anti-doping officer Vitaly Stepanov, who said the former head of Russia’s drug testing lab told him he had a ‘‘Sochi List’’ of Russians who competed on performance-enhancing drugs, and four athletes on that list won gold medals in 2014. Stepanov made the allegations about Sochi in an interview with ‘‘60 Minutes’’ due to air Sunday . . . University of Missouri softball players played Saturday’s game against South Carolina under protest because of an internal investigation they say focuses on the program and its coaches. Without detailing possible reasons for the investigation, the players said the inquiry by the school's athletic department is “wholly unsubstantiated.’’ . . . Miles Johnson had 15 kills and Ohio State beat BYU, 32-30, 25-23, 25-17, to win its second NCAA volleyball title.
