While many high school baseball players are still getting back to early-season basics, don’t count Newton North junior righthander Michael Banks among them.
Banks tossed a no-hitter Wednesday to lead the No. 10 Tigers over No. 16 Milton, 3-0, in Milton.
“Warming up I actually didn’t feel that good. But once the game started, it all clicked,’’ Banks said.
Coach Joe Siciliano summed up Banks’s and the rest of the team’s performance in one word: confidence.
Banks said he has a good connection with senior catcher Michael Gately, only having to shake off a couple of Gately’s pitch calls. Banks threw first-pitch strikes to 18 of 23 hitters.
Gately also helped Banks with a solid offensive performance, going 2 for 4 with a single, double, and a run scored.
Banks struck out four and walked four, needing 95 pitches in seven innings to get his no-hitter. Two of Banks’s walks came in the final inning, but Siciliano never lost confidence.
Siciliano said cool weather can benefit a pitcher. “If it was a warmer day then maybe I would have pulled him.’’
The defense behind Banks was superb — the one error coming on a wild pickoff attempt by Banks.
The season is young but the Tigers have reason to be confident after their pitchers allowed just two hits in their first two games.
