Maggie Malloy didn’t need any help in overtime for the Canton girls’ hockey team.

The junior forward won a loose puck in the neutral zone and beat the entire Milton defense for the unassisted overtime winner as the No. 12 Bulldogs climbed back from two deficits for a 3-2 win in the Canton Ice House Invitational championship on Saturday night.

Malloy’s efforts earned her MVP honors.

“She’s such a competitive athlete,’’ said Canton coach Dennis Aldrich. “What she just did there, that’s what she does in practice every day. She’s very explosive . . . Once she made that cut though, she’s got that glow in her eyes. As well as their goalie was playing, I thought it was done.’’

Even though the host Bulldogs (3-0-3) won the tournament, the game was recorded as a tie for MIAA purposes.

The No. 15 Wildcats (4-0-3) opened the scoring while on the penalty kill with 6:24 left in the opening period, as Julia Scannell fed Kat Buchanan with a perfect entry pass for a shorthanded goal past Colleen Kelleher (15 saves).

The Bulldogs got one back more than two minutes into the second period, as freshman Maria Femia finished off a two-on-one opportunity for her first career goal.

Milton reclaimed the lead right before the buzzer, as Scannell forced a turnover on the backcheck and took the puck coast-to-coast for a 2-1 lead with 37.5 seconds left in the period.

Canton continued to pepper Milton freshman netminder Maeve Corcoran (25 saves) with shots, finally breaking through with 5:58 left in the third when a Leah McClellan wrister from the blue line beat her between the pads to tie the game, 2-2.

The teams traded chances in overtime before Malloy’s heroics gave Canton the win.

“[Milton] took us out of our game a little bit, but to be able to fight through that and get to that point, we just never quit,’’ said Aldrich. “And it showed up last year. It got us to the Garden last year . . . I don’t think pressure situations get to them too much.

“I will never doubt them. It’s a real character-building win.’’

Westwood 5, Medfield 1 — Junior­ captain Kat Keith had three goals, and classmate Olivia Jordan added three assists from the blue line as the Wolverines (5-3) prevailed in the third-place game in the Canton Ice House Invitational.

Duxbury 2, Medway 0 — Senior­ captain Jill Cosgrove scored twice for the Dragons (4-1-1-).

Shrewsbury 5, Natick 1 — Delaney Couture notched a first-period hat trick and added a goal in the third to lead the visiting Colonials (5-0) past the Red Hawks (2-2).

Gabby DeSouza added a goal for Shrewsbury.

Auburn 6, Oakmont 1 — Carrianne Fortier scored twice in the second period to guide the Rockets (2-2) at Horgan Rink. Auburn’s Amalia Monson also had a goal and two assists.

Mackenzie McHatton scored off a pass from Sarah Craig in the third period for the visiting Spartans (0-5).

Boys’ hockey

Brockton 1, Milton 1 — Al Bermingham scored the equalizer for the Boxers (2-2-1) with 10:39 left in the game. Ross Dexter tallied in the first period for the Wildcats (2-1-3).

Silver Lake 4, Cardinal Spellman 2 — Junior David Marani registered a hat trick and an assist and sophomore Kevin Cardarelli scored for the Lakers (3-2-1).

St. John’s (Shrewsbury) 5, Lowell Catholic 1 — Matthew Myers notched a hat trick and Casey Sullivan and Will Horrigan both added goals to lead the host Pioneers (4-1-1) past the Crusaders (1-2-1). Hunter DiGregorio and Jack Herlihy each had two assists for St. John's.

Roxbury Latin 3, Vermont Academy 2 — Senior Jimmy Duffy scored the hat trick for the host Foxes in the Roxbury Holiday Showcase.

Hanover 4, Bishop Stang 0 — Senior forward Tyler Martin scored twice, classmate Nick O’Sullivan had three assists, and junior Kevin Chandler had the shutout in net for the Indians (5-0-1).

Plymouth South 4, Oliver Ames 3 — Sophomore Jake Gottwald scored his first varsity goal and Brett Williams tallied twice for the Panthers.

Masconomet 8, Somerville 1 — Will Major netted a hat trick for the Chieftains (3-1).

St. John Paul II 3, Cohasset 1 — Sophomore Joey Manning scored the winner with 8:56 left in the third period in the consolation of the JP2 Invitational in Hyannis.

Xaverian 4, Duxbury 0 — Junior Josh Barton recorded a goal and an assist and classmate James Herring had 24 saves for the shutout.

Chelmsford 3, Westford 2 — Sophomore Ben Pitts scored two goals, including the winner with 1:26 left for the Lions (2-5).

Shrewsbury 5, Framingham 1 — Cole Russo scored twice to boost the No. 1 Colonials (4-0-1) at the NorthStar Ice Center. Shrewsbury’s Anthony Quinlivan and James Tepper both collected a goal and two assists, while Liam Quinlivan notched three assists.

Girls’ basketball

Stoughton 49, Norwood 32 — Val Whalen scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help the Black Knights (1-5) earn their first win of the season.

Randolph 48, Holbrook 36 — The hosts pulled away with a 10-0 run in the second half to capture the Blue Devils Holiday Classic.

Bishop Eustace (N.J.) 60, Medfield 55 — Senior Maggie McCarthy­ (27 points) earned MVP honors for the second straight year, but the Warrriors (6-1) were dealt their first loss in the final of the KSA Tournament at Disney World.

Foxborough 42, Coyle & Cassidy 41 — Lily Sykes drained a 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds left off a feed from Ashley Sampson as the host Warriors dealt C&C its first loss of the season. C&C beat Foxborough in OT, 50-40, in the opener on Dec. 8.

Brockton 48, Holyoke 39 — Senior Analeesia Fernandes paced the Boxers (4-2) with 23 points.

Arlington Catholic 42, Fenway 32 — Junior Erin Donlan netted 21 points for the Cougars (4-2).

Cardinal Spellman 47, Pope John 30 — Victoria Williams (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Caroline Stover (15 points, 14 rebounds) each tallied double-doubles as the Cardinals (3-2) rolled.

Whitman-Hanson 59, Westminster Academy (Fla.) 53 — The Panthers (7-0) captured the Queen of Palms Tournament Emerald Division championship in Florida. Junior captain Kathryn Dunn, the tourney MVP, along with fellow captain Erin Leahy and sophomore Olivia Martin were named to the all-tournament team.

Wayland 56, Framingham 37 — Senior Darby Leid paced the Warriors (3-3) with 19 points, 17 rebounds and four steals. Teammate Naomi Latham 14 points and four steals.

Austin Prep 53, Hamilton-Wenham 47 — Catherine Bravo led the Cougars (3-1) with 14 points.

Bishop Guertin 50, Westford 42— Sophomore Hannah Muchemore scored 17 points as the unbeaten Cardinals topped the Grey Ghosts in the championship game of the Commonwealth Motors Classic at Central Catholic.

Holy Name 65, Revere 47 — Jaini Edmonds (16 points) earned MVP honors and Sophia Masciarelli (22 points) and Logan Lornell (9 points) were named to the all-tournament team as the visiting No. 3 Naps (4-2) won the Acton-Boxboro Tournament championship.

Westborough 44, Concord-Carlisle 37 — Emily Hannan, Carolyn Kelley and Tess Garrity each scored 10 points for the host Rangers (3-2).

Boys’ basketball

St. John’s Prep 80, Central Catholic 68 — Senior forward Tommy O’Neil had 33 points and nine rebounds to help the No. 3 Eagles (4-1) overcome a 15-point first-half deficit and knock off the No. 2 Raiders (3-1) in the Commonwealth Classic championship.

Senior Matt Relihan had 18 points and Jarnel Snow-Guzman added 12 points for the Eagles while junior guard Kevin Constant led the Raiders with 19 points.

Whitman-Hanson 79, Hollywood Christian (Fla.) 38 —Senior captains Sean Leahy and Jacob Hanson-Bartlett scored 16 points apiece and classmate Tyler Rice added 13 to lead the Panthers (4-2) in Florida.

Roxbury Latin 51, Nobles 49 — With 10 seconds remaining, sophomore forward Charlie Weitzel hit the winner for the Foxes (4-1).

Marshfield 67, Scituate 64 — Senior guard Joe Waisgerber (18 points) scored the last five points for the Rams (3-1).

Melrose 60, Lynnfield 47 — Chris Cusolito scored 11 points to help the Red Raiders (2-2) knock off previously unbeaten Lynnfield.

Malden Catholic 80, East Boston 56 — Senior Chris MacDonald had 32 points and junior­ Kendrick Jean-Francois scored 16 as the Lancers (1-6) earned their first win.

Needham 65, Xaverian 41 — Brandon Monheimer scored 16 points, Thomas Shaughnessy added 14, and Will Cooper tossed in 11 to go along with nine rebounds for the undefeated Rockets (5-0).

Bedford 64, Tyngsborough 59 — Christian Beck scored 23 points and was named MVP, but the Tigers (4-2) fell in the IAABO Board 95 Tournament final. Tyngsboro’s Max Hurley and Phil Sutherland both scored 11.

North Reading 84, Greater Lowell 70 — Senior forward Lionel Beane registered career highs in points (23) and rebounds (8) to carry the Hornets (4-4) in the consolation of the IAABO Board 95 Tournament at Lowell Catholic.

Natick 74, Stoughton 54 — Senior Sho Kinugawa (19 points) earned tournament MVP honors as the Redhawks rolled in the final of the Blue Devils Holiday Classic in Randolph.

Nashoba 57, Oakmont 29 — Jack Richard scored 18 points to lift the Chieftains (2-3).
