Eight put to death over ISIS assault

TEHRAN — Iran executed eight men convicted over an Islamic State attack on Parliament and the shrine of the Islamic Republic’s founding ayatollah, the bloodiest terror attack to strike Tehran in decades, authorities said Saturday. The June 2017 offensive was the only one so far by the Sunni extremist group inside the Shi’ite country. Iran has been deeply involved in the wars in Iraq and Syria, where the militants once held much territory. (AP)

May says Cabinet united on EU exit

LONDON — Prime Minister Theresa May claimed victory in her bid to unite her Cabinet behind her latest Brexit policy, but many hurdles lie ahead. May warned ministers she will no longer tolerate public criticism of government policy after the Cabinet backed the policy late Friday night. It endorsed plans for a future free-trade deal with the European Union that would keep some close ties to the bloc even as it ends freedom of movement. (AP)

9 killed in attack at government site

MOGADISHU — A least nine people were killed and 13 wounded in an attack on Somalia’s Interior Ministry. Security forces killed all three attackers after a two-hour gun battle inside, police said Saturday. The al-Shabab extremist group claimed responsibility. Several people, mostly government workers, were trapped in the ministry. (AP)

Principal, teachers charged with rape

PATNA — Police in eastern India have arrested a school principal, two teachers, and three students after a teenage girl blamed them and 13 schoolmates for repeatedly raping her for the last seven months, police said Saturday. The girl named the 19 in a written complaint. Police are looking for the 13 others accused. (AP)

Protesters support migrant sea rescues

BERLIN — Several thousand demonstrators marched in Germany’s capital Saturday in support of the private aid ships that rescue migrants in the Mediterranean Sea. Many in the crowd carried life jackets. Similar demonstrations were planned in other German cities. The ships are encountering increasing opposition from Italy and other countries. (AP)
