Tea Forté Pops up on newbury
Joel Benjamin

The silky, pyramid-shaped tea infusers from Tea Forté look as if they could levitate. The pillowy enclosures with a wire stem and a tiny green leaf at the tip are filled with fine blends of herbs, berries, blossoms, and leaves that unfurl in hot water. The company offers close to 100 varieties — rooibos from South Africa, oolong from China, Northern India’s pan-roasted black teas, herbal teas that taste of apples and spice, ceremonial matcha, and others flavored with coconut or ginger. Product designer Peter Hewitt founded the company in West Concord 15 years ago and created the infusers so loose-leaf teas can expand to better appreciate their richness and bouquet. The artisan blends are still created here with Polish-born master blender Piort Miga and sold worldwide at specialty shops, restaurants, and hotels. Now, Tea Forté has its first storefront — a pop-up on Newbury Street (a plan for a permanent location to open next year is being finalized). Step inside and at first glance you may think the sleek space is an upscale perfume shop. Turn to the “sniffing corner’’ and you’ll find an array of test tubes affixed to the wall filled with the aromatic teas. Open them and, well, sniff. Tasting stations have Mono Filio glass teapots showing off the blends’ vibrant colors. “The retail store is an opportunity for people to come in, play, feel, and touch the brand. Before the only way we can tell our story is through the website,’’ says CEO Michael Gebrael. Canisters of loose-leaf teas, pyramid infusers in stainless and beautiful teaware — ceramic cups and saucers, teapots, pitchers, tumblers, and more — are also available. Shelves are lined with boxes of assortments of teas that come in collections, and there are dozens ($15 to $35 for 10 to 20 single-steep infusers). Relax with herbal teas from the Herbal Collection; end a meal with the dessert teas in Dolce Vita. The new Bleu Collection, a line using butterfly pea flowers from Thailand, creates an eye-catching blue cup of tea, or a vividly colored tea-infused cocktail. 177 Newbury St., Boston, 617-247-1100. www.teaforte.com.
