Blue Jays’ Bautista on DL with sprained toe
From staff and wire reports

Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left big toe. The injury occurred Thursday night in Philadelphia when he got his foot caught in a fence latch while trying to make a catch. Bautista was wearing a walking boot Friday in the Toronto clubhouse. ‘‘I could’ve stepped 1 inch shorter of the wall, 1 inch closer to the wall, and none of this would've happened,’’ Bautista said. Bautista is batting .230 with 12 homers and 41 RBIs for the defending AL East champions. He also has a team-high 48 walks. A preliminary exam did not show any fracture, but Bautista will undergo further tests to determine the severity of the injury. Toronto recalled outfielder Darrell Ceciliani from Triple A Buffalo . . . White Sox center fielder Austin Jackson underwent surgery on his left knee Wednesday and will be examined in four weeks. Jackson, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list June 10, had a small portion of the medial meniscus removed and will be on crutches for two weeks.

No new lawyers for Briles

Fired Baylor coach Art Briles has withdrawn a demand for new lawyers in a federal civil rights lawsuit against him and the university amid reports he has settled a contract dispute with the school. Briles’s lawyers had told a federal court Thursday he wanted attorneys separate from Baylor and had no intention of settling the lawsuit filed by a woman who was raped by a Baylor football player. The filing suggested a bitter court fight was brewing between Baylor and the coach who claimed his May 26 firing was wrongful termination. Briles withdrew the motion Friday as multiple media outlets cited anonymous sources in reporting Briles and Baylor had reached a settlement on his contract, which ran through 2023 . . . Clemson outfielder Seth Beer won the Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball’s national player of the year, the first freshman to receive the award.
