Joe DeCamillis stepped up to the podium Monday in Englewood, Colo., after general manager John Elway named him interim head coach and was instantly met with a welcome-to-the-show question: ‘‘Who’s your quarterback?’’
The Broncos’ 51-year-old special teams coordinator dodged the inquiry, declining to say whether Trevor Siemian or Paxton Lynch would be under center when the Broncos (4-1) visit the Chargers (1-4) Thursday night.
‘‘We've got a lot of guys we’re evaluating this week,’’ he said. ‘‘How’s that?’’
Elway tabbed DeCamillis after doctors ordered head coach Gary Kubiak to take a week off after experiencing a ‘‘complex migraine condition’’ shortly after Denver suffered its first loss of the season.
The Broncos saw their nine-game winning streak snapped 23-16 by the Falcons with Siemian sidelined by a bruised left shoulder.
Kubiak, 55, was transported to the hospital by an ambulance — the second time that’s happened in three years — after experiencing flu-like symptoms. He was kept overnight and doctors determined he had what the team termed a ‘‘complex migraine condition’’ that caused lethargy.
Kubiak was sent home from the hospital Monday afternoon.
‘‘He’s going to be back, but he’s going to take this week and take care of some of those issues and find out if there are some different triggers,’’ Elway said. ‘‘We’re just excited that Gary is OK and that the prognosis looks great.’’
Kubiak had a health scare in 2013 when he was coach of the Houston Texans, suffering a ‘‘mini-stroke’’ and collapsing at halftime of a game against Indianapolis. He returned 10 days later, but was soon fired.
Ravens fire Trestman
The Ravens fired Marc Trestman as offensive coordinator and replaced him with quarterbacks coach Marty Mornhinweg.
Coach John Harbaugh made the move, less than 24 hours after the Ravens managed only one touchdown in a 16-10 loss to Washington. Baltimore has lost two straight after opening 3-0.
Operating against the league’s 29th-ranked defense, the Ravens failed to score in the second half after abandoning a running game that worked well before halftime.
Quarterback Joe Flacco said he was ‘‘embarrassed’’ at the way the offense has played this season.
He added: ‘‘Our defense is putting up awesome plays week after week and we’re just running off the field. It doesn’t feel good as a quarterback, the leader of this offense, to do that.’’
Harbaugh said his decision to dismiss Trestman came after ‘‘very careful consideration.’’ He added: ‘‘We will work to be better in every aspect of our football team.’’
Trestman was in his second season as Baltimore’s offensive coordinator. Last season, the Ravens had the second-most total net yards in team history but went 5-11.
Palmer could be back
Cardinals coach Bruce Arians says he expects quarterback Carson Palmer to pass the last stage of the concussion protocol on Tuesday. That indicates Palmer could be back for next Monday night’s home game against the Jets.
Arians says he expects inside linebacker Kevin Minter to pass the protocol Tuesday as well.
Palmer was injured when his head slammed to the ground on a sack by Aaron Donald in Arizona’s 17-13 home loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 2. He sat out Thursday night’s 33-21 victory over San Francisco while backup Drew Stanton filled in.
Minter sustained what Arians has called a ‘‘mild’’ concussion in the 49ers game. The Cardinals also released quarterback Zac Dysert and signed guard/tackle Martin Wallace.
Tunsil hurt in shower
The Dolphins say rookie guard Laremy Tunsil was unable to play in Sunday’s 30-17 loss to Tennessee because he hurt his ankle in the shower. On Monday, coach Adam Gase said Tunsil slipped in the shower at the team hotel several hours before kickoff.
‘‘I'm driving to the game, and I'm with our offensive line coach,’’ Gase said. ‘‘He gets a phone call, and I hear him talking on the phone, and I'm like, ‘Who’s he talking to?' ’’
It’s uncertain how long Tunsil will be sidelined, but he’s not on crutches and is able to walk, Gase said.
Tunsil became the biggest story of this year’s NFL draft when a bizarre video was posted on his Twitter account showing him smoking from a gas mask connected to a bong. He had been projected as a possible No. 1 overall pick and instead fell to Miami with the 13th choice.
When asked if sobriety was an issue regarding the ankle injury, Gase said: ‘‘The guy was taking a shower and slipped.’’
Also, the Dolphins claimed cornerback Bene Benwikere off waivers after the Panthers released him last week. Benwikere reinforces depth following the loss of rookie starter Xavien Howard , who is expected to be sidelined several weeks recovering from minor knee surgery. Miami’s other starter, Byron Maxwell, has struggled this season and was benched for a game.
The Panthers parted with Benwikere after they allowed 503 yards passing by the Falcons. He was targeted for nearly half that total. A fifth-round draft pick in 2014, Benwikere started 14 games in three years with Carolina.
Kessler may play
A day after Cody Kessler and Charlie Whitehurst were both injured in their 33-13 loss to the Patriots, the Browns quarterback situation was as messy and unclear as it has been in many weeks. X-rays on Kessler, who injured his chest and ribs when he was drilled by linebacker Dont'a Hightower, did not reveal any breaks.
Browns coach Hue Jackson said there’s a chance that the third-round draft pick, who vaulted up the depth chart after Robert Griffin III (shoulder) and Josh McCown (collarbone) were injured in the first two weeks, will practice this week and play Sunday at Tennessee. Whitehurst may not be as ready. After becoming the fifth quarterback to play in five games for the Browns this season, he hyperextended his knee in the final minutes and is listed day to day.
For a change, though, it’s not all bad news for the Browns. McCown has been cleared to practice and could be in uniform against the Titans.
Bills activate Henderson
The Bills activated offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson a week after he completed serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. In making the move, the Bills placed safety Colt Anderson on injured reserve a day after he hurt his arm in a 30-19 win at Los Angeles. Henderson gets an opportunity to resume his career after having two operations on his intestines last offseason to reduce the effects of Crohn’s disease. Henderson’s agent, Brian Fettner, said his client tested positive for marijuana, which the player was using to treat the inflammatory bowel disease. Buffalo’s 2014 seventh-round draft pick started 26 games at right tackle before being diagnosed with the disease last December . . . The 49ers signed cornerback JaCorey Shepherd to a two-year contract and placed Chris Davis on injured reserve. Davis hurt his knee last Thursday against Arizona and the Niners . . . Redskins receiver Pierre Garcon and defensive end Ricky Jean Francois flew to Haiti to deliver medical supplies to victims of Hurricane Matthew. Garcon and Jean Francois, who are of Haitian descent, traveled on owner Dan Snyder’s plane. The team said Snyder and his wife flew a plane full of supplies to the Bahamas on Saturday.
