Before he won the Academy Award for his role in “Manchester by the Sea,’’ actor Casey Affleck was widely criticized for allegations of sexual harassment stemming from a 2010 lawsuit filed by two women who’d worked with him on a film.
The issue still seemed to be in the air on Oscar night when actress Brie Larson, who presented Affleck with the best actor award, didn’t applaud while everyone else at the Dolby Theatre gave Ben Affleck’s kid brother a standing ovation. Immediately, memes of the awkward moment were all over Twitter.
Well, this week, Larson, who has a history of supporting victims of sexual assault, talked to Vanity Fair about her reaction to Affleck’s win.
“I think that whatever it was that I did onstage kind of spoke for itself,’’ she told VF at the premiere of her new movie, “Kong: Skull Island,’’ at the Dolby Theatre. “I’ve said all that I need to say about that topic.’’
For his part, Affleck has been mostly mute on the subject. In an interview with the Globe a few days after the Oscars, Affleck said both sides in the lawsuit are prevented from talking about the allegations.
“I believe that any kind of mistreatment of anyone for any reason is unacceptable and abhorrent, and everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace and anywhere else,’’ Affleck said. “There’s really nothing I can do about it,’’ Affleck added wearily. “Other than live my life the way I know I live it and to speak to what my own values are and how I try to live by them all the time.’’
