Flood damage costs reach $8.7 billion

BATON ROUGE — Governor John Bel Edwards said Louisiana had more than $8.7 billion in damage from flooding in August, and the figure is expected to increase as officials finish assessing damage to infrastructure. Edwards asked that Congress approve $2 billion in federal aid for housing, economic development, and infrastructure. That would be in addition to emergency programs assisting in flood recovery. (AP)

Medical marijuana program to expand

ALBANY — More than 7,000 people have signed up for the New York state medical marijuana program since the state began allowing patients with certain conditions to obtain nonsmokeable forms of the drug. Now officials plan to expand the program, including home delivery and more dispensaries. They will also allow nurse practitioners to authorize medical cannabis. (AP)

14 people injured in fair ride accident

MEMPHIS — Police in Memphis say 14 people were injured Saturday when they were thrown from an amusement ride at the Delta Fair. All the injured people were in stable condition. It was not immediately clear how many adults and children were on the ride, called the Moonraker. The cause of the accident has not been determined. (AP)

Giant panda again gives birth to twins

ATLANTA — A 19-year-old giant panda gave birth to twins at Zoo Atlanta on Saturday. It is the panda’s second set of twins. Lun Lun was artificially inseminated in March. Lun Lun and male panda Yang Yang have seven offspring together. (AP)
