Former Cuomo aide’s corruption trial set to begin

ALBANY, N.Y. — For decades, Joseph Percoco was among Governor Andrew Cuomo’s most loyal aides and confidants. This week, he faces trial in New York City on federal charges he used that relationship to collect more than $315,000 in bribes from two companies doing business with the state.

Jury selection begins Monday in a case that has already proven to be a political embarrassment for Cuomo, a Democrat and possible presidential candidate in 2020 who took office vowing to do something about Albany’s corrupt culture.

Cuomo is not accused of wrongdoing but the charges against Percoco have damaged Cuomo’s image as a reformer.

Percoco’s ties to the Cuomo family go back to his service when he was a teen to the governor’s father, the late governor Mario Cuomo.

As Andrew Cuomo’s executive deputy secretary, Percoco was known for his intimidating manner. He left state employment in 2014 to lead Cuomo’s reelection campaign. He has pleaded not guilty.
