Laverne Cox broke through — and got an Emmy nomination — as Sophia on “Orange Is the New Black.’’

Then she made history as the first trans actress to be a series regular on network television, on the CBS legal drama “Doubt’’ with Katherine Heigl.

Then “Doubt’’ was canceled after only two episodes.

Now, Cox is back in action. She’s landing on her feet. She has been cast, as co-lead, in a pilot called “The Trustee.’’ The hourlong show is of the female-buddy-cop variety, and she will play an ex-con finishing her prison sentence by working for the police department.

Meaghan Rath (of “Banshee’’ and “Being Human’’) plays her buddy on “The Trustee,’’ a detective who finds Cox’s character extremely helpful, if annoying. Also in the cast: Michael Cudlitz, an actor from “The Walking Dead’’ and “Band of Brothers’’ who was particularly memorable on “Southland.’’

By the way, Cox did win an Emmy, a Daytime Emmy, as a producer of the MTV series “The T Word,’’ in 2015.
