Jan. 31, 1935: An estimated 12,000 people turned out at the Boston Garden for a charity ball to celebrate President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 53rd birthday, the Globe reports. Attendees ranged from “boxholders from the Back Bay to balcony occupants from Charlestown who were treated to a display of brilliant uniforms, flags, military maneuvers, beano games, and wheels of chance.’’ Funds were raised for “infantile paralysis control.’’
