Maybe the success of their two-week South American swing, which ended Monday night in Santiago, Chile, will prompt James Taylor and Sir Elton John to do the something of the sort in North America.

The pair were welcomed everywhere they went, even by the Legislature of Buenos Aires, which declared the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers “Huéspedes de Honor’’ (or, for you non-Spanish-speakers, honored guests). One newspaper hyped their appearance, saying the show was a “must-see duel.’’ Predictably, the vintage songwriters treated audiences — they drew 45,000 people at São Paulo’s Allianz Parque football stadium — to their biggest hits.

Standing next to J.T. after the final show in Santiago, John quipped, “Well, that’s the long and short of it.’’

Next up for John is an eight-night stand in Las Vegas followed by a slew of shows in Europe. J.T. will have some downtime in the Berkshires before hitting the road for dates at Tanglewood (July 3 and 4) and several US arenas and ballparks, including Fenway (Aug. 11.) with Bonnie Raitt.
