One of my favorite under-recognized series in recent years is “Please Like Me,’’ a mild Australian comedy that started out in the United States on Pivot and then moved to Hulu. It was warm, odd, and touching, as it negotiated the mental illness of the hero’s mother for four seasons.
That show was created by Josh Thomas, who also starred. Now Thomas may be coming back to TV — to Freeform — with a show he created called “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay.’’ The setup has Thomas’s 25-year-old living at home with his single father and two half sisters. When his father becomes terminally ill, he has to step up.
Of course, it’s Thomas’s sweetly quirky take on life that will distinguish the show — if it makes it to air. So far, Freeform has only ordered a pilot.
Oh — while I have you — do check out “Please Like Me,’’ if you like gentle, deadpan comedy. It’s yet another ensemble-of-friends-in-their-20s sitcom. But Thomas, with his Tweety Bird face and sweetly awkward demeanor, makes it into something much more. He’s thoroughly endearing and innocent, as he deals with looking for love and copes with his divorced parents, particularly his troubled mother.
