President Obama fulfilled his role as comedian-in-chief one last time Saturday evening, poking fun at journalists and politicians alike at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. One of Obama’s many jokes about the state of journalism was aimed at the Globe Spotlight team in attendance — editor Walter Robinson and reporters Mike Rezendes, Sacha Pfeiffer, and Matt Carroll — and the film based on their investigation of clergy sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church. The president quipped, “As you know, ‘Spotlight’ is a film about investigative journalists with the resources, the autonomy, to chase down the truth and hold the powerful accountable. Best fantasy film since ‘Star Wars.’?’’ The director of “Spotlight,’’ Tom McCarthy, as well as screenwriter Josh Singer and actors Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams also attended the dinner, as did Globe owner John Henry, wife Linda Pizzuti Henry, and reporters from the paper’s DC bureau. National politics reporter Matt Viser received the Merriam Smith Memorial Award for deadline reporting.
