The Service Employees International Union scored a victory on Wednesday when workers at a Partners HealthCare hospital in Jamaica Plain voted to join the union.
Workers at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital voted “overwhelmingly’’ to join the SEIU’s local 1199, union officials said.
The move affects about 500 people in administrative, housekeeping, food service, and medical interpreter jobs. Wednesday’s vote follows an earlier agreement between Faulkner and the SEIU that allowed the union to organize at the hospital.
Faulkner workers will join about 56,000 other Massachusetts health care workers represented by SEIU Local 1199.
Partners, the state’s largest health system, and the SEIU have historically been at odds. Last year the union proposed a ballot initiative that would have cut payments to Partners hospitals, but it dropped that proposal after a compromise was reached, and Partners and union officials agreed to form an “alliance.’’
“Through a free and fair election process, service workers at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital joined together and will now use the strength of their united voice to better advocate for themselves and their families while continuing to provide the quality care their patients need and deserve,’’ Tyrék D. Lee Sr., executive vice president of the union, said in a statement.
Faulkner spokesman David Goldberg said the hospital has good relationships with other labor unions that represent its workers and expects a “similarly positive relationship’’ with the SEIU. “As always, the well-being of our employees and our patients will remain at the forefront of all we do,’’ he said in a statement.
