Cambridge’s proportional approach is a good model

Thanks to the Globe for editorial attention to Lowell’s need to revise its election system (“Lowell should dismantle ‘majority rule’ system,’’ Editorial, May 22).

However, to cite Cambridge as if it used a ward voting system missed an overdue chance to talk about proportional representation. This approach, as little as it is understood by voters and the media alike, has assured Cambridge minority representation on the City Council for three-quarters of a century.

Proportional representation permits any sizable minority to combine forces citywide to elect a councilor, while also assuring that the councilors will not have a ward-limited perspective when they address citywide issues.
