A Somerville man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a Chelsea teen last year, the Suffolk district attorney said.

A Suffolk County grand jury returned indictments Friday charging Juan Carlos Matos Figueroa, 21, with first-degree murder in the death of 15-year-old Jimmy Vasquez, according to a statement from the Suffolk district attorney’s office.

Vasquez was shot to death on Shurtleff Street in Chelsea on the evening of Jan. 13, 2017.

Another teen who was with Vasquez was also shot but survived, according to the release.

State Police and Chelsea police arrested Figueroa at a Jacques Street residence following the indictments.

“Jimmy Vasquez wasn’t involved in gangs, guns, or violence,’’ Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said in the statement. “He wasn’t in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was an innocent young man doing what kids his age have always done — hanging out with his friends on a Friday evening.’’

A woman who spoke through an open window of the family’s Chelsea home Saturday afternoon declined to comment on the arrest.

Figueroa was also charged with armed assault with intent to murder, and assault and battery by means of a firearm for the nonfatal shooting, among other charges. Additionally, he was charged with four counts each of armed assault with intent to murder, and attempted assault and battery by means of a firearm for allegedly shooting at four individuals who were at the scene but not injured.

Figueroa is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Suffolk Superior Court.
