The first quarter of the year is over and the start of spring is here. This is the time of year that our service department is getting ready to repair roads, cut grass and continue to maintain our ditches, catch basins and infrastructure.

I anticipate a very busy construction season. The Route 82 widening project (W. 130th Street to York Road) will continue with work on the storm sewer and watermain along Route 82 mainly between Spruce Run and Abbey Road. This section should be finished shortly, and then they will move to east of Abbey Road heading towards York Road. Tap-ins for the watermain will be occurring at the same time. Work has already begun to remove pavement on the south side of the roadway to construct a cross-section for the new roadway. This will allow them to begin paving the eastern portion of the road this year.

Trying to keep the road safe is always a main concern. The city has been given notice that the contractor has a standing order to restripe the centerline as often as needed to keep the road safe. Unfortunately, when the weather is too cold or wet, the paint will not adhere to the surface. The city is working on alternative solutions for the future. The city appreciates your continued patience with this major project.

I expect this summer to be very challenging for all of us. There are many road and construction projects that are scheduled for this year. The rest of Route 82 between York Road and the Broadview Heights line will be resurfaced. We are also finalizing plans to repair additional streets with resurfacing, joint repair or patching.

In addition to the schools starting their expansion and renovation of the high school, there are other new buildings and remodels being done as well as new homes being constructed.

The City Green will be getting a much-needed electrical upgrade in addition to new signage. The cemetery will be getting some work done as well. The historical Receiving Vault will be repaired with a $100,000 grant we received, and a sign and entrance upgrade will also be added.
