The month of February has been a slow legislative time, but I can use this opportunity to remind you about one of our supplemental recycling programs.

We partnered with Simple Recycling early last year. I know some of the parameters for regular recycling have changed, but Simple Recycling continues to collect old textiles such as stained or ripped clothing, old curtains and drapes, coats and jackets, blankets, shoes, stuffed animals, etc. at the curb at no cost to our residents or the city. Residents can use the orange bags that they received and put them out on the curb on their regular trash day.

I would still encourage you to donate to your regular charities and use this as an alternative for items that are not appropriate for donation such as items that are unwearable or stained, torn or damaged and would otherwise end up in the trash. Approximately 10 percent of a city’s waste stream is attributed to clothing and housewares, and 85 percent of clothing gets thrown away rather than recycled. It’s a great program because it takes these items out of the landfill.

Our service clubs have continued to struggle with membership. A couple of months ago, Councilman Langshaw and I conducted a survey to see why residents are not interested in joining these organizations. We found that most residents who participated in the survey indicated that they did not know that the clubs existed or they didn’t know enough about what the clubs do.

In an effort to help these important organizations who do so much for our city, we have organized a North Royalton Service Club Open House on Saturday, March 2 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The clubs will be available to share information about their organization, membership benefits and the special projects they do in the community. There will be a free raffle with prizes donated by the different clubs. Augie’s Pizza has generously provided free pizza, salad and refreshments as well. Please make some time and stop in to learn more about these important clubs.
