NORTH ROYALTON – Mayor Larry Antoskiewicz announced at the North Royalton City Council’s regular meeting Feb. 4 the city will hire a new information technology network technician.

He explained the new technician will be assigned to take care of technical issues with the city’s police and fire departments. Antoskiewicz said his plan is to have the current IT manager work with city hall and other city buildings as the technician handles the police and fire stations.

Ward 5 Councilman Vincent Weimer commended Antoskiewicz for this decision and explained all city employees will receive proper training to keep up with new technology and security. The council approved an ordinance to amend the city’s current staffing ordinance to hire an IT technician.

Also at the meeting, resident Fred Schreiver expressed his views on the single use plastic bag ban now in effect in neighboring Cuyahoga County suburbs. He said he believes there are no benefits to banning plastic bags and does not think North Royalton should do so. Schreiver explained reusable bags take up more energy and make the process of checking out items at grocery stores longer. The Building and Building Codes Committee will address this issue at its next meeting.

At the meeting, the council also approved the following items:

• A resolution commending Matthew Trottnow on the attainment of the rank of Eagle Scout

• An ordinance authorizing the expenditure of funds for the purchase of three 2020 Ford Interceptors for the North Royalton Police Department from Lebanon Ford for an amount not to exceed $96,162

• The amendment of an ordinance to establish rates of compensation for city non-union employees during 2020

At the city’s Streets Committee meeting prior to the city council meeting, Antoskiewicz reported City Engineer Mark Schmitzer reached out to the Ohio Department of Transportation regarding the cleaning of the sidewalk on Bennett Road and said the project will start as soon as possible.

Service Director Nick Cinquepalmi reported the city has used 3,000 tons of salt less this winter than was used at this time last year, adding the salt the city has purchased costs approximately $62 per ton.

Ward 1 Councilwoman Jessica Fenos inquired about the status of the repairs of mailboxes damaged by snow plowing on city streets, to which Cinquepalmi reported all have been repaired.

At the Utilities Committee meeting prior to the city council meeting, Antoskiewicz reported the city is working with ODOT to finalize plans to add a drainage system to York Road and said the plan is for the construction to start in July.

The next North Royalton City Council meeting is scheduled for Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. at North Royalton City Hall, 14600 State Road.
