SHARON – May 20 was a never-to-be-forgotten evening by 12 students who received a total of $15,900 in scholarships from the Sharon Women’s Club.

With families and friends present, the scholarship reception took place at the Sharon Town Hall.

The academic scholarship winners were introduced by Kim Miller, who received the first scholarship awarded by the women’s club in 1991. Known as the Betty J. Osborn Scholarship, it is so named because of the work of the late Betty Osborn, whose persistent efforts helped make the scholarship program possible. Scholarships are awarded to deserving high school graduates or college students who live in Sharon Township.

Those winners are Logan Bowers, who will attend Miami University; Nathan Gillin, who will head to Miami University; Tyler Madison, who will attend The University of Akron; and Brandon Anthony James Yu, who will attend Baldwin-Wallace University.

Absent were Armin Gasser, who will attend the University of Alabama; Alexandra Kiehnau, who will attend the University of New England; and Nathan Fousek, who will attend Bowling Green University

The hard work of the women’s club and its successful fundraising efforts came to the attention of the Hiller Foundation in 2017, which granted the women’s club $10,000 annually to augment its academic scholarship awards and provide building or trades scholarships to Highland High School graduates who have received two-year certificates from the Medina County Career Center. The five recipients will share $8,400.

Eleanor Hammond, co-president of the women’s club, called the name of Ameila Hinkleman, who was not present, but who will attend Tri C to further her career in dermatology.

She introduced Anna Aeshliman, who will attend Cedarville University to earn her bachelor’s degree in optical technology and Evan French, who is studying design and will attend Savannah College of Art and Design in Animation; Autumn Kuenzer will attend Penn State online to further her education in animal care and management, while Blake Kalina will attend Notre Dame College in South Euclid to pursue a degree in nursing.

The Sharon Women’s Club has only one fundraiser a year, the popular and well-attended Fall Fest, which is planned for Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the town hall and the circle. The items offered by vendors are of good quality, reasonable and present a variety of items excellent for Christmas giving, according to the organizers.
