Building with steel I-beams, poured concrete, and red bricks can have divisive Brutalist results (think Boston City Hall), but on Providence’s College Hill, the outcome was a house with graceful columns of rounded red brick and dazzling, unobstructed views.
That view from the hilltop perch is of the city itself, including the Rhode Island State House, which has one of the world’s largest self-supported marble domes. In this home design by Boston architects Huygens & Tappe, every west-facing room has floor-to ceiling windows or sliders that lead either to balconies on the upper level or a patio near the pool on the lower level. There is also an interior stairwell partnered with a waterfall.
From Congdon Street, stepping through the wooden door leads to a long hallway clad in dark-brown ceramic-clay tile. To the left is an office with a gas fireplace and another standout feature of this uncommon house: an oblong skylight, one of several custom ones of various geometric designs in the home.
Down the hall and to the left, the clay-tile floor gives way to narrow-cut oak upon entering the master suite, which has a walk-in closet and that impressive view. In the bathroom behind curved walls of glass blocks is a shower and a tiered-stone Roman bath. The shower area is an oval, echoing the skylight. There is a water closet, and the vanity is topped with a lustrous green and white marble.
Back in the hall, a rightward turn leads to the dining area and then into the living room, where sliders offer access to a balcony and black glass shields a wood-burning fireplace framed by poured concrete. The walls, however, are a combination of drywall and circular red brick made on site.
The galley kitchen is a beauty, with honey-stained bird’s-eye maple cabinets and green marble countertops. Thanks to the large pass-through the owner added over the sink, folks left to clean up after dinner can take in the State House view.
A long staircase that bends its way to the lower level is accompanied by a waterfall that flows through three pools and is framed by natural stone. Off the lower level landing are two large bedrooms, each with en suite baths. A separate bath is ready for sunbathing guests to change.
The 0.50-plus-acre property has a heated in-ground pool and includes the neighboring lot at 132 Pratt St.
